Our history

Since 2010, Pancreatic Cancer Action has been a driving force for change in the fight against pancreatic cancer. Born from the personal experience of our founder, Ali Stunt, and joined by the Scottish movement led by Pancreatic Cancer Scotland, our journey is one of bold ambition, impactful action, and unwavering commitment to saving lives through early diagnosis.

Founding Pancreatic Cancer Action

Pancreatic Cancer Action (PCA) was founded in 2010 by Ali Stunt, who is herself a rare survivor of pancreatic cancer. Diagnosed in 2007, Ali’s personal experience highlighted the urgent need for earlier diagnosis and better public awareness. Her vision was clear: to create a charity solely focused on improving early detection and survival outcomes for pancreatic cancer patients.

The emergence of Pancreatic Cancer Scotland

That same year, Pancreatic Cancer Scotland (PCS) was launched by a team including pancreatic cancer specialist Ross Carter. PCS was established in response to the distinct healthcare system in Scotland and the need for targeted support, awareness, and education north of the border. Initially volunteer-led, PCS built momentum across communities and healthcare networks throughout Scotland.

Growth and impact

Over the next decade, both PCA and PCS expanded their reach and influence. PCA developed accredited e-learning for GPs and pharmacists, launched the UK’s first pancreatic cancer pharmacy training, and funded vital research and clinical posts. PCS introduced specialist educational materials, worked closely with NHS Scotland, and implemented staff-led initiatives from 2017 onwards.

The 2020 merger: uniting for greater impact

In January 2020, PCA and PCS announced their intention to merge, recognising that a unified approach would amplify their shared mission. The merger was formally completed in April 2020. Pancreatic Cancer Action now operates as a single UK charity, with Pancreatic Cancer Action Scotland delivering Scotland-specific programmes under the same organisational umbrella.

15 years of action

In 2025, Pancreatic Cancer Action celebrates 15 years of tireless work. During this time, the five-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer in the UK has more than doubled, rising from 3% to just over 7%. Through pioneering training programmes, clinical funding, and innovative awareness campaigns, PCA has made measurable strides in transforming pancreatic cancer outcomes.

Looking ahead
