Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Campaigns

There is a serious lack of awareness in the UK among the public and the healthcare community about pancreatic cancer. Almost half of patients have never heard of pancreatic cancer before their own diagnosis.

Our recent survey shows that 95% of the UK don’t know a lot about the symptoms of pancreatic cancer. It is crucial that people are aware of the signs and symptoms and are not afraid or embarrassed to visit their GP or pharmacist to seek advice.

There is a lot of documented evidence showing that greater awareness and understanding of cancer symptoms can lead to early detection – and better outcomes. A recent report by The Health foundation identifies early diagnosis as critical to improving a person’s chance of survival, as early-stage cancer is more responsible to treatment than later stage cancer. It is also recommended that there needs to be more progress in helping the public understand the symptoms associated with cancer, so they can seek help sooner.

Increased awareness and early diagnosis can help saves lives and also save the NHS money – diagnosing 50% of pancreatic cancer sufferers through A&E (rather than through GPs) costs the NHS nearly £5,000 per patient or nearly £21m per year.
