Originally from York and now living in London, Jamie Rankin applied for the New York Marathon, not really to get a place! Low and behold he is now setting off in November after much training to take part in this epic marathon!
Jamie says – “I’m attempting to run the New York City Marathon this November, the first person for Pancreatic Cancer Action. It has been a lifelong ambition to take on the streets of the Big Apple and one I wasn’t going to do without a good reason.
My wife’s Auntie, whom she was very close, died too soon of the horrible disease so have seen the impact it has on a tight knit group of family and friends.
There are a lot of charities out their, but with some prior knowledge and a bit of research, I opted for PCA. Why? Well, this is all about raising awareness and of all the cancers, pancreatic doesn’t leave sufferers with much of a prognosis once diagnosed (25% of people survive the first year and only 5% live for 5 years).
The key preventative is early diagnosis as it generally goes undetected until it is at an advanced stage so really wanted to help fund further research giving people that fighting chance.
I have so far raised £1047 so very close to my target of £2000 on my virgin money giving page…”
