Jenny Bazely Runs Leicester Half Marathon for Pancreatic Cancer Action After Personal Connection to Diagnosis

Jenny Bazely, a freelance dietitian based in Leicester and originally from Edinburgh, is lacing up her running shoes for a cause close to her heart. On 23rd February, Jenny will take on the Leicester Half Marathon to raise funds for Pancreatic Cancer Action, inspired by her best friend’s father, Larry, who was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Jenny has known Larry since she was five years old, making his diagnosis deeply personal. Her dedication has already resonated with many, helping her surpass her initial fundraising target by nearly double the amount! In a touching gesture, Larry himself contributed a generous donation.

“Pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed too late because its symptoms, like indigestion, back pain, and unexplained weight loss, can easily be mistaken for other conditions,” Jenny shares. “As a dietitian, I witness the impact of this disease firsthand, and I want to help raise awareness and promote earlier diagnoses.”

Pancreatic cancer is often called the “silent killer” due to its subtle symptoms. Recognising these early warning signs is crucial:

  • Persistent indigestion or heartburn
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort, especially in the upper abdomen or back
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • New-onset diabetes

Jenny’s training routine is no easy feat, especially while balancing life as a mum of two. Her eight-year-old son, who now outruns her during training sessions and jokes that she’s “too slow,” has turned running into a family activity. His newfound love for running has made the journey even more memorable.

With every mile, Jenny is not only raising vital funds but also spreading awareness about pancreatic cancer and the importance of early diagnosis. All funds raised will support Pancreatic Cancer Action’s mission to improve early diagnosis and save lives.
