Pancreatic Cancer Action

Q: What questions should I ask my doctor (s)?

Answer:

The shock and stress that people may feel after a diagnosis of cancer can is common and it is often difficult to think of questions to ask when attending your doctor or pancreatic specialist. Often it helps to make a list of questions before an appointment. Bringing a family member or friend with you when you talk to the doctor-to take part in the discussion, to take notes, or just to listen can help. Always remember that the doctor is there to answer your questions so dont be afraid to voice your opinion or question any action or procedure.

Common questions are:

  • What type of pancreatic cancer do I have?
  • Is it hereditary?
  • Has the cancer spread?
  • What treatments do you advise and why?
  • What are the risks and possible side effects of each treatment?
  • Will I have to stay in hospital, or will I be treated as an outpatient?
  • How long will the treatment take?
  • Will I have pain from the cancer or the treatment? What will be done about this?
  • Will the treatment affect me physically or sexually?
  • Will I need to change my diet after treatment?
  • Are there other treatment choices for me? If not, why not?
  • What will happen if I don’t have any treatment?
  • Are there any clinical trials I should know about?
  • How often will I have check-ups and what will they involve?
  • I would like a second opinion. Can you refer me to someone else?
