It is not unusual for patients to want to explore alternative treatments, especially should their cancer not respond to standard therapy. Around the world there are many specialist centres that are involved with clinical trials of new approaches.
It is however important to clarify that at present NONE of these alternative therapies are of proven benefit, and indeed may actually have no effect on the cancer at all, and may be associated with side effects. This is why clinical trials are required to establish whether promising results from the laboratory can be confirmed in the treatment of patients. No alternative or homeopathic medicine has been shown in a properly designed clinical trial to improve survival, but undoubtedly complementary therapies may improve general wellbeing and therefore quality of life.
